ORGANISTS ON THE MOVE

Note from Editor: It is hoped to keep readers up to date with organists’ appointments, relocations, etc., but to do this he needs to be informed. Please pass on news as appropriate; everything is not heard on the grapevine!

Joyce Trimble (formerly of All Saints, Blackrock) has been appointed organist to St Stephen's Church, Upper Mount Street.

Fraser Wilson has been appointed organ scholar to Christ Church Cathedral.

Patrice Keegan has been appointed organ scholar to St Patrick's Cathedral.

David Connolly (formerly organ scholar at the Pro-Cathedral) has been appointed organist to St Michael's Church, Dún Laoghaire in succession to Anne Leahy.

DEPUTY ORGANISTS

The deputy organist list is published every year in the Dublin and Glendalough Diocesan Directory. (If you haven't seen this excellent resource, your parish office will have one.) We will supply an updated list on request. The list also is on our web site. If you would like your name added (or deleted) please let us know.

FEE GUIDELINES

The Guidelines on Fees for Church Musicians may be downloaded from our web site. (www.churchmusicdublin.org/fees). The 2007 rates will be available from mid-November and will be circulated to those on our email alert list. If you would like a copy through the post, send an SAE.

ARCHBISHOP'S CERTIFICATE

Congratulations to Carol Wilkinson, organist in Athboy Parish, Co. Meath, who has successfully completed the three year course leading to the Archbishop's Certificate in Church Music.

LIMERICK ORGAN DAY

As part of the 2007 Limerick Festival of Church Music, we hope to host an Organ Day in conjunction with the Pipe Organ Society of Ireland, where you will have an opportunity to play and listen to Limerick's finest pipe organs. The provisional date for this Organ Day is Saturday, 3 March 2007, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Our guest of honour at next year's festival is the world acclaimed organist and composer, Br Jean-Paul Lecot (Lourdes) and he has agreed to give a closing organ recital at around 5 p.m., on the Hill organ at St John's Cathedral. Details of the festival along with the programme of events will be available as soon as they have been finalised, and will be circulated in due course.

Look forward to seeing you all at next year's Limerick Pipe Organ Day—pencil it in to your diaries!

CORRECTION

In the last issue of SOUNDBOARD, the interview of Bishop Darling was attributed to Jacqui Wilkinson, Editor of ‘Follow Me’ the RTÉ programme. This should have been the RE programme, which is produced for use in schools under the patronage of the protestant schools in the Republic of Ireland. Apologies to Ms Wilkinson and to Bishop Darling for the error.

SPREAD THE WORD …

We hope you enjoy this issue of SOUNDBOARD. There is something in it for everyone. What do you do with your copy when you have finished reading it? Do you circulate it to your choir, give it to your rector? We will send extra copies for a small charge. Simply let us know how many.

E-MAIL ALERT LIST

Are you on the Committee's e-mail alert list? We regularly distribute information about training courses and other events of interest to church musicians. If you are in any doubt about whether we have your email address, send a brief message to info@churchmusicdublin.org.

BUSY SUMMER FOR ST BRIGID'S CATHEDRAL CHOIR, KILDARE

St Brigid's Cathedral choirWhat a busy and exciting year it has been for St Brigid's Cathedral Choir, Kildare. It all started with the highly successful launch of their CD Ceol Cill Dara in a packed cathedral last February, followed by a Diocesan confirmation and then the installation of the new Dean, Dr John Marsden. By the way, the CD has done very well with over 500 sold to date. Many thanks to all who purchased and we wish you many hours of enjoyable listening!

Then the choir received an invitation to sing at the annual open air service in Clonmacnoise in July, and this was a lovely service on one of the sunniest days of the year. What a perfect way to sing the praises of our Lord!

The high point of the summer was an invitation to sing at the final concert in a summer series held in Christ Church Cathedral, Waterford. The choir was in excellent form and gave a fine performance to a large and enthusiastic audience. But it didn’t end there! They joined with Christ Church Cathedral Waterford Choir to sing at the enthronement service of the new Bishop, Michael Burrows, on the Sunday evening. Eric Sweeney conducted the joint choirs and Derek Verso was organist on the cathedral's wonderful newly restored pipe organ. Add to all that, a lovely meal together, good fun and hard work in rehearsal, you have the ingredients of a happy but exhausted choir returning home to Kildare, who can be justly proud of them. Well done to one and all.

Derek Verso
